During her last year at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax Tara Sgroi won the American green card lottery. Tara didn’t waste time, she said goodbye to her home in Toronto and headed to New York, where she studied at Cooper Union. New York became her inspiration and has been her home for the last 15 years.

“I love to photograph,” she says. “I’m happiest when I am shooting & I feel completely invisible. I soak everything in; the people, the food, the colors, all the elements that create a story about what is happening in front of me. One of my first jobs was photographing in Provence for 18 days for Frederic Fekkai’s book, A Year in Style. Each day I’d return to the hotel and sit in the bathtub with all the Polaroids from the day stuck to the rim of the bathtub. I was completely surrounded by what I’d seen. It was a great feeling to be exhausted but to see the story unfolding."

Tara has carved out a career that encompasses children, lifestyle and fashion. Because she travels a great deal Tara has put together a brand new Travel portfolio (see it for the first time above). It is with an unfailing vision that she sees every subject. Every shot has the stamp of the unmistakable Sgroi approach. Tara shows us the beauty in the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary.
